You use one every time you send a piece of mail, but have you ever stopped to think about what ZIP codes actually mean? In 1944, postal worker Robert Moon came up with an idea to make mail sorting easier. It was called the Zone Improvement Plan Code — otherwise known as the ZIP code.
- The first number stands for a broad area in a group of states. It starts at zero for the East Coast and goes to nine for the West Coast.
- The next two numbers designate the code for the central post office facility in that region.
- The last two numbers are for the smaller post offices in that zone.
